Resumen:

Correspondence of three generations of the MacKay family in Beaufort District, S.C., and Orangeubrg District, S.C., documenting plantation life, the Civil War, Reconstruction, crops, medical treatment, education.

Letter, 3 Oct. 1822, Pocotaligo, S.C., from Mungo Mackay, to his son Robert William Mackay, Charleston, S.C., re storm damage to crops, and cloth prices for slave clothing; letters, 10 Mar. 1825-19 Aug. 1828, (McPhersonville, S.C.), from R.W. Mackay, to his brother, G.C. Mackay (Charleston, S.C.), re money earned from hiring out of African-American slaves, discovery of a plot by a slave to poison another slave, crop conditions and damage from caterpillars, profitability of planting rice, raising poultry, finances, and family and community news, including an incident at a school in which the teacher sruck a pupil, and action "strenously prohibited by the Trustees." This correspondence ends in 1828 when Robert W. Mackay dies of a "violent fever."

Letter, 28 Mar. 1825 (Pocotaligo, S.C.), from R.W. Mackay, to G.C. Mackay, Charleston, S.C., re writing letters, disciplining slaves, and burden of property loans; letters, 1825-1827 (Charleston, S.C.), from cousins Harriett and Charlotte Porcher Chisolm to R.W. Mackey (in McPhersonville, S.C., and New York), discuss a fire in Charleston (June 1826), death of Thomas Jefferson, organization of a musical society, and a work society to aid students at the German Theological Seminary, social activities and the season of horse racing, thoughts on the study and writing of history, and plans for building a theater near Tivoli Garden.

Letter, 4 Dec. 1827 (Columbia, S.C.), from Hugh Swinton Legare, to G.C. Mackay (Charleston, S.C.), re legal affairs; letters, 11 Oct. 1828 and 9 Oct. 1830 (Charleston, S.C.), from Dr. E. Horlbeck, to George C. Mackay (in Edingsville and Pocotaligo, S.C.), re Presidential election, his new drug business, nullification controversy, yellow fever, and reports of a slave insurrection; letter, 21 Jan. 1837 (Paris, France), John M. Chisolm to George Mackay requesting assistance in making next season's crop and discussing the appropriate salary for an overseer employed by the estate of Dr. E.N. Chisolm; letter, 14 Oct. 1850 (Savannah, Ga.), from Ed Neufville, to G.C. Mackay, re sale of land and possible increase in foreign business.

George C. Mackay died in 1861, leaving his wife, Abigail Martha Jenkins to manage the plantation; collection includes letters of condolence on Mackay's death; three sons, William A., George C. and Joseph Mackay served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War; "Roster of the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery, C.S.A."; letter, 18-19 May 1863 (Camp Gregg, S.C.), to "Dear Sister," comments on battle action, Federal immigrant recruits, death of Pinckney Seabrook, criticism of Col. Daniel H. Hamilton, death and dismemberment of soldiers, hoping for end to Civil War; and noting the more religious, practicing-Christian officers of his company.

Papers, 1874-1926, chiefly consist of correspondence of the children with their mother, mention of labor contracts with African-American freedmen, poor business conditions, schools and education, and family affairs.
