Like a gigantic magnet, Earth generates a magnetic field, called the magnetosphere. The magnetosphere is not symmetrical, due to distortions from solar wind, a permanent flow of electrically charged particles emitted from the sun. Some solar wind particles do penetrate the Earth's atmosphere, giving rise to the colorful and magnificent polar auroras.
