|Note:||Fourth edition of the first encyclopedia of witchcraft and demonology.
It was compiled by Dominican papal inquisitors Institoris and Sprenger for Germany in response to a bull against heresy promulgated by Pope Innocent VIII, which sanctioned interrogations and punishment of suspected witches. Their handbook outlines all practices of witches' sabbaths, intercourse with the devil, casting spells, etc., and details procedures for inquisitors to follow in conducting witchcraft investigations and trials.

Printed running titles and foliation "I"-"CXXXVII" on leaves a1-r9.
Imprint from colophon on leaf r9 recto, which reads in full: Anno deitat[is] .Mcccc.xciiij. presens liber que[m] editor Malleu[m] malleficaru[m] intitulauit per Antonium koberger Nurbergen[sem]. ciue[m] est i[m]pressus & ad hu[n] finem perductus .xvij. die me[n]sis Marcij.
Ampersand in imprint represents a Tironian sign. Imprint date transposed: statement of year precedes printer's name, while the day and month appear at the end of the statement.
Signatures: [phi]⁸ a-q⁸ r¹⁰ (leaf e2 unsigned; leaf m2 signed "i ij"; [phi]8 and r10 blank).
45 lines and headline, double column; 2- to 7-line initial spaces, some with printed guide-letter.

UVa Library copy: Blank [phi]8 not present. Initials supplied in red by hand. Provenance: From the library of William G. Mather with his bookplate on front paste-down. Featured at the top of the bookplate is a view of the main house on Mather's Gwinn estate, and in the center is a book opened to reveal a portrait of his ancestor Richard Mather, father of New England's puritan clerical dynasty. Bottom center has William G. Mather's monogram. With a small paper label: "Wm G. Mather Accession No. 1796" at top left corner of the front paste-down. Binding: German alum tawed pigskin binding over wooden boards. Covers lind tooled into a panel design with a triple line fillet. Each panel is blind tooled with a different decorative tool or roll. the middle panel is filled with a Spes, Caritas, Fides figure roll. Spine: rebacked.
