It was compiled by Dominican papal inquisitors Institoris and Sprenger for Germany in response to a bull against heresy promulgated by Pope Innocent VIII, which sanctioned interrogations and punishment of suspected witches. Their handbook outlines all practices of witches' sabbaths, intercourse with the devil, casting spells, etc., and details procedures for inquisitors to follow in conducting witchcraft investigations and trials.
