Abstract:

Effective use of language has become an ever more important factor in the success of any enterprise. Dr. John Baugh provides a succinct overview of the evolution of American English and its many forms. He discusses the cultural effects of race and background on how we speak. Dr. Baugh explains that the subtle but compelling conclusions people reach about us, based on the ways we speak, result in profound economic consequences both for ourselves and for our organizations. Increased awareness of the impact of language helps us understand the impressions we form of others and the need to build tolerance of variations in dialect and language use.
