Abstract:

Explains the nature of grief and the grieving process and how to recognize the emotional and physical manifestations of this condition. Distinguishes between normal and abnormal resolution of grief and examines such topics as: reasons why patients do not seek support, factors which complicate grief and suicide risk factors. Emphasizes the family physician's unique role in early intervention by validating appropriate forms of grieving and supporting the patient through counseling and with medication when indicated.
