Abstract:

Materials pertaining to Carrière include correspondence; drafts of three articles: "Brissot de Marville's Plea for the Creation of an American Language," "Early Examples of the Expression 'American Language'" and "Unpublished Comments of William Short on Mme. d'Houdetot"; and notes and draft of "A French Diary of the Virginia Campaign of 1781."

Materials from Wyllie pertain chiefly to printing history and include files on early printers, particularly Edward Allde, John Allen, William Caxton, a printer of Henry Hammond, Felix Kingston, Valentine Simmes, and George Veseler and Nathaniel Butler. There is also research material on printers' devices, signatures, printing presses, and watermarks.

There are also engravings from an 1831 encyclopedia; copies of woodblock engravings including those used in the Virginia Gazette; a copy of an annotated copy of Poor's catalogue of Jefferson's library; notes and transcriptions of a 17th century article on a sea-fight.

Correspondents include Lucretia Bishko, Charles E. Hatch, Jr., and William M.E. Rachal.
