Originally produced on 16 mm. in Spanish in 1992, but never released in that version. Columbia Pictures showed the 35 mm. version with English language subtitles at film festivals in 1992 and released it theatrically in 1993. Special collector's edition contains original Spanish language track, English dubbed track and director's commentary. LC holds both laserdisc special collector's edition version and 35 mm. English language subtitled version released by Columbia Pictures in 1993.

Abstract:

A stranger enters a small town in Mexico. Dressed in black and carrying a guitar, he is a singer named El Mariachi looking for a gig. Also in town is a revenge-crazed drug lord named Azul, who also wears black and carries a guitar and who is at war with his ex-partner Moco.
