Abstract:

Negative taken of a historical marker at Camden, Ouachita County, Arkansas. The marker commemorates that John Nunn, a pioneer, donated the land where the first Ouachita County Courthouse was erected. Camden at that time was called Fabre's Landing. Deane more than likely took this negative during his career with the Arkansas Gazette. Marker reads, "No. D17. Ouachita County. Ecore A-Fabre or Fabre's Bluff. Early French and Indian Trading Post. John Nunn, a pioneer settler, donated a square at Fabre's Landing in 1842, on which was erected the first court-house in Ouachita County. The name of the settlement was soon afterwards changed from Fabre's Landing to Camden. The county was given the name of the river and the French spelling was used for the Indian sound of 'Washita.' Arkansas Centennial Commission 1836-1936 Arkansas History Commission."
