Abstract:

"Kei Puta Te Wairau is the Maori name for part of the area now known as Marlborough. It is an abbreviation of an old Maori proverb which ran - the sun always finds a hole to shine through at the Wairau. In 1859, Marlborough won a hard-fought independence as a province. It has since carved out a unique identity shaped by its magnificent scenery and its people. Stories of both are intertwined throughout these 500 or so pages as snapshots in time, mostly drawn from the last 75 years. Collectively, they tell of Marlbrough's transition from a raw, undeveloped landscape to a land of plenty and of many of the people who have been part of that story. Told through a collection of contributions these are the stories of people who wrest a living from the land and from the sea; people in manufacturing and business, governance, transport and aviation; our tangata whenua; people in music and the arts, in sport, education and those who seek to preserve the past, protect the environment and many more besides. It acknowledges the past and records for the future, aspects of Marlborough during its first150 years"--Back cover.
