The Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity were conceived (more than a decade before --
they were born) by a small group of scientists, engineers, and managers who had a --
remarkable group vision: project ourselves there through robotics, and then explore the --
place remotely as if we were there in person. These colleagues, and the subsequent --
team of thousands of incredibly talented people from around the world that assembled --
to carry out this vision, are the ones who deserve the biggest acknowledgement here, --
for bringing these rovers "alive" and for enabling me to share with everyone the --
remarkable photographic views showcased in this book. I am also grateful to the --
engineers and technicians at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and elsewhere who --
designed and painstakingly assembled the Mars rover cameras to specific and exacting --
tolerances (enabling the high quality, stereoscopic views depicted here), and to the --
science and engineering team members who have been helping to write the sequences --
and to acquire the Pancam, Navcam, Hazcam, and Microscopic Imager pictures from --
Mars for more than 2500 sols, combined. We had hoped that at least one of the rovers --
would last 90 sols on Mars; our hopes were exceeded in the most incredible fashion! --
Fusing left and right camera images into 3-D anaglyphs is a tricky business, and it --
depends enormously on the proper processing and geometric projection of the images. --
In that regard I am very grateful to Jonathan Joseph at Cornell University for developing --
the extremely capable and flexible "mermap" image processing software that allowed --
me to generate many of the 3-D as well as color views shown here, and to the team at --
the JPL Multimission Image Processing Laboratory (especially Bob Deen and Kris --
Capraro) for generating some of the anaglyph images shown here using their own skills --
and similarly-excellent software. I am also very grateful to Ken Herkenhoff and his --
colleagues on the Microscopic Imager (MI) team at the U.S. Geologic Survey in --
Flagstaff for suggesting and generating the 3-D views from the MI shown here, and to --
fellow Martian travelers Doug Ellison, Ken Kremer, and Nico Taelman for suggesting --
some of their favorite photos (so many to remember!). While these folks have been --
amazingly helpful on this project, I've done enough meddling that any shortcomings in --
the selection, processing, or visualization of the images are completely my fault, not --
theirs. --
On a personal level, I thank Michael Bourret from Dystel & Goderich for believing in this --
project from the beginning and (gently) helping to refine it. And as always, I am grateful --
to my wife Maureen and my children Dustin and Erin for their support, patience, and --
indulgence while I was working to assemble this collection of wonderful Mars images --
