The bits I read of this book showed me it is a good read but unfortunately our 'to be read' pile is quite large already. - A Romance originally written in Danish and translated by Arthur G. Chater. - An award winning author's second book, after The Philosopher's Stone for which he won the "Gyldendal prize" of 70,00 kroner (roughly $14,000 in 1926 dollars). - From the back of the dust jacket we quote: "This book follows the spiritual progress of two sisters, Mary and Martha, to a complete and harmonious conclusion. The sisters, contrasting protagonists of the active and the contemplative life, are portrayed with the vast understanding which distinguishes Anker Larssen as one of the foremost living (Written in 1926 mind you) Scandinavian novelists.We must add that the words 'spiritual progress' might be of an Asian/Oriental meaning. We read that the author was influenced in that direction but, as said we did not read this book so... - prying1books -
