With commendatory verses by Joseph Scaliger and Freidrich Lindenbrog ("F. Tiliobroga").
With portraits of Henri II de Bourbon, Prince de Condé at age 10, with 4 lines of verse by Grotius printed in letterpress underneath, and of Hugo Grotius at age 15, both engraved by Jacob de Gheyn II and dated 1599.
Collation: 8vo: *⁸ 2*⁴(-2*4 + '*2') [pi]1 A-X⁸, [dagger]⁴ ²A-E⁸ [$5 (-[dagger]3,4) signed]; 225 leaves, pages [26 unnumbered] 1-336 [88 unnumbered (87-88 blank)] + plate. Leaf 2*(*2) contains the commendatory verses; leaf [pi]1 is the portrait of Henri de Bourbon, with letterpress text; the plate is a leaf containing only the engraved portrait of Grotius.
Leaf [pi] (portrait of Henri de Bourbon) is described in the collation note as bound in the Brown University copy; the portrait of Grotius is bound before leaf ²A1, the beginning of Grotius' preface "Amice lector" that precedes his notes. Watermark and chainline evidence in leaf 2*(*2) of the Brown University copy would indicate an integral leaf; the binding precludes determining whether it is in fact an insert. In copies noted by STCN, the prelimimaries are often incomplete and/or the portraits are lacking.
Text in italic type; preliminaries and editorial apparatus in roman type.
