Correspondence, notebooks, essays, biographies, books, articles, poetry, reminiscences, genealogies, pamphlets, memorabilia, portraits, and photos, of and about Mary Lyon, educator and founder (1837) and principal (1837-1849) of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, including information on her personal and professional life, religious philosophy, ideas on education and particularly women's education, and women in 19th-century New England. Includes materials relating to the planning and operation of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary as well as other seminaries including Ipswich Female Seminary, Sanderson Academy, and Wheaton Female Seminary, and information on Ashfield, Buckland, and Byfield, Mass., where Lyon lived.
