Abstract:

Provides a concise account of the variants of the Roman rite still in use today which utilizes material from many sources not readily available in English. After discussing in an introductory chapter the development of the Roman rite and its variants from the earliest period of Christian worship to the later Middle Ages, the author devotes chapters to the Ambrosian rite of Milan, the Mozarabic rite of Toledo, the rites of Lyons and Braga, and the monastic rites of the Carthusians, Cistercians, Premonstratensians, Carmelites and Dominicans. The Neo-Gallic liturgies, the English Sarum rite and the Roman-Slavonic liturgy are discussed in three appendices. [Back cover].
