Guido Mazzoni; Duke University. David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Mazzoni Pamphlet Collection.
|Notes:||The library of Guido Mazzoni was purchased from the Mazzoni family by Duke University Library in 1948. Most of the monographs from Mazzoni's original library have been cataloged and dispersed throughout the Perkins Library general collections. The larger component, the pamphlet collection, is represented by collection-level records in the Duke libraries' on-line catalog, an online finding aid, and a searchable electronic database which holds brief records for each of the almost 50,000 items in the collection.
The Mazzoni Pamphlet Collection includes pamphlets, librettos, clippings, periodicals, small volumes, newspapers, scores, manuscript items, small cards, broadsides, and a photo album. The bulk of the material dates from the mid-eighteenth to the early twentieth century. Approximately 80 percent is in the Italian language; other languages include French, English, German, Greek, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, Czech, Polish, and Hungarian.
The pamphlet collection is organized by the original call numbers assigned by Mazzoni, consisting of a letter group, each subdivided by numberals, then each pamphlet acquired a roman numeral. Each of the seven lettered sections, A-G is represented by its own catalog record. The "A" section represented here contains 3337 pieces. There are also quarto and folio sections that contain items separated from the A section. Further, the online database describes major subject areas related to the items in the collection: archaeology; Italian architecture; Italian art; bibliography; biography; biographical items on Guido Mazzoni; Dante Alighieri; education; travel in Europe; travel in Italy; Italian history; Italian politics and government; Italian social life and customs; Italian church history; Italian literature; Italian drama; Italian poetry; Italian language; librettos; musicology; songs; periodicals, Italian periodicals; philosophy; science in Italy; World War I; World War II; and miscellaneous. Of particular interest are the many pieces on Italian poetry and drama, as well as many items on World War I, in which Mazzoni served, and of the rise of Fascism and its pre-20th century context. A large group of items dating chiefly from the 18th and 19th centuries are epithalamia, or "per nozze," literary pieces printed on the occasion of a wedding.
Item-level access to the Mazzoni pamphlet collection is available in the Duke University Special Collections Library through a searchable electronic database. Each record contains: call number (Mazzoni's numbering scheme), author, short title, title, other names (authors or subjects), publication date, indication if item is a "per nozze" (an item, usually literary in nature, printed on the occasion of a wedding), brief notes, and one of 31 Library of Congress subject headings.
