Abstract:

The collection consists of ca. 48,000 architectural drawings, including ink on linen, blueprints, and other media; ca. 600 packages of detail drawings and specifications; ca. 1,500 photographs, including prints and glass and film negatives; ca. 20 photograph albums; ca. 650 boxes of correspondence; ca. 50 ledgers, including 17 bill books (1878-1947), 10 cash books (1894-1944), 8 contract books (1903-1930), and 9 journals (1882-1942); ca. 10 scrapbooks and 100 folders of clippings; and more than 300 original line drawings made to illustrate A Monograph of the Works of McKim, Mead & White, 1879-1915. The material contains extensive documentation of the firm's operations and of individual buildings. Original drawings, blueprints, and other material are available for some 1,000 commissions, although most information about the firm's early years is provided by photograph albums, clipping scrapbooks, and financial ledgers. The early careers of many architects who trained at the firm, for example, Henry Bacon, can also be studied.

McKim, Mead & White commissions at the Society include Shingle Style, Colonial Revival, and other country houses in Newport, Rhode Island; urban residences such as the Villard Houses, New York; Boston Public Library; Rhode Island State Capitol; Prospect Park entrances, Brooklyn, New York; Pierpont Morgan Library, New York; and Pennsylvania Station, New York. The Interborough Rapid Transit Powerhouse, New York, and the restoration of the University of Virginia rotunda represent less typical projects. After 1909, William M. Kendall, William S. Richardson, and other junior partners carried on the firm's work with such commissions in New York City as the Central Post Office, the Hotel Pennsylvania, and the Racquet and Tennis Club.
