Abstract:

"As dress historian Margaret Scott demonstrates in this book, manuscripts provide a window on to the changing fashions and dress of the medieval world, and she unravels the messages about rank, aspirations, beliefs and occupations encoded in the images. Her authoritative text is accompanied by illustrations showing the range of dress styles worn in the Middle Ages in England and much of Europe, and across the social classes from princes to paupers. One can clearly see the elaborate dress style of the monarchy and aristocracy, often richly patterned and adorned with jewels and fur, reflecting the status of the wearer or patron. But the author also explores the dress of other classes and occupations, which provides equally important information about everyday life and times in the Middle Ages, such as the patterns of work, the climate and the functional uses of clothing." "Medieval Dress and Fashion is a historical resource that will prove invaluable to art historians, costume designers and all those interested in this colourful period."--Jacket.
