Fragment:

Romain Rolland was a non-Jewish author and humanitarian who frequently incorporated Jewish values and characters in his novels. He was largely influenced by Spinoza. Rolland gave "Jewish values a broad and universal meaning for modern civilization. Not only had the Jew his own traditions to contribute to the French heritage, he also had a special vocation in the western world, being the bearer of 'Justice for all, of universal Right'" (EJ). Rolland "protested vigorously against the Nazis' persecution of the Jews in 1933 and continued to denounce racism as a scientific error and a dangerous threat to human civilization" (Universal Jewish Encyclopedia).
