Parts' numbers continuous; paging continuous in each volume. Each part has 32 p., frontispiece photograph and 4 wood engravings (some include etchings or lithographs).
In the original 38 parts. Text completely rewritten by Cooper from Le Keux's edition of 1841-42, and with more than double the number of illustrations. Includes original 75 steelplate views engraved by the Le Keux family from the drawings of Frederick Mackenzie and John Anderson Bell, with 63 added steelplates, 16 lithographs and etchings, and 31 albumen print photographs. Text illustrations by Byfield, Jewitt, and others.
Publishers' listings vary slightly in each part.
Vol. 1 (no. I-XIII, Nov. 1858-[Nov.] 1860), 401, [1], [ix]-xx p., 11 photos., 54 engravings. Vol. 2 (no. XIV-XXVI, 1860-1861), [1]-viii (from v. 1), 393, [1], xvi p., 11 photos., 52 engravings. Vol. 3 (no. XXVII-XXXVIII, 1861-1866), 383, [1], XV (prelims.)--p., 9 photos, 49 engravings.
Description: 38 parts in 3 v., [ca. 185] leaves of plates : ill., coats of arms, plan, mounted photos. ; 23 cm.
Responsibility: engraved on steel plates by J. Le Keux, from original drawings made expressly for the work ; with photographs printed by F. Frith.
