Imprint is a variant of another Oxford printing of the first issue which reads: Oxford, printed by Henry Hall. 1642. Cf. English Revolution.
Initially edited by Peter Heylyn; from Sept. 1643 edited by John Birkenhead, who also assisted with earlier issues. Cf. Frank; English Revolution.
First no. issued with one of two title pages: 1) bearing the title: 'Mercvrivs aulicus, a divrnall, communicating the intelligence, and affaires of the Court to the rest of the kingdome' and the imprint: Oxford : printed by H. Hall, for VV. VVebb, Ann. Dom. M. DC. XLII [1642, i.e. 1643]. 2) bearing the title: 'Mercvrivs aulicus, a divrnall, communicating the intelligence, and affaires of the Court to the rest of the kingdome, beginning the first day of January' and the imprint: Oxford : printed by H. Hall, for W. VVebb bookseller, neere to Queenes Colledge, 1642 [i.e. 1643]. Cf. Nelson & Seccombe 275.000A and 275.000C; not to be confused with the equivalent for the London reprint (Nelson & Seccombe, 275.000B and P1263.
Thomason copy of the last issue includes MS. notes which read: "ye last Aulicus" on the first page and "here ends Aulicus" at the foot of the last page.
Variant printings of several issues are known; whether Oxford or London reprints is disputed by authorities in some cases. Cf. Nelson & Seccombe; Madan; English Revolution.
Numerous gaps in publication during 1645.
A supplementary special issue: A Trve and briefe relation of the great victory obtained by Sir Ralph Hopton, was published in Oxford between weeks 3 and 4 of the regular numbers; later reissued in a revised edition.
The first and most important of the Royalist newsbooks, one of the few published in Oxford; later newsbooks of the period copied this title.
This record subsumes all editions (including counterfeits and rival editions, etc.) of individual issues of this title, as recorded by Nelson & Seccombe; cf. also P1263 for London reprints of this title published 1643-1644.
