Abstract:

Merrano of the Dry Country: When Miguel Merrano first came to Mirror Valley, the land was green and lush ... and off limits to Mexicans. Ranchers such as Tom Drake and Joe Stangle tried to drive Merrano out, to fence him out; and when he warned them that greed and overgrazing would ruin their land, they refused to listen. Now Merrano's predictions have come true. Mirror Valley is so dry it's about to blow away. The cattle are hollow-ribbed and dying. And the ranchers are broke ... flat broke. Only Merrano's ranch is still thriving. As the ranchers watch him pay for goods in gold and sell his cattle at a mighty profit, their hatred grows and festers ... until they draw their guns in a desperate act that will pit daughter against father, friend against friend -- an act that could tear the valley apart forever.

Law of the Desert Born: When Shad Marone, foreman of the Running-F ranch, hired Lopez, he had never intended anyone to end up in jail, or dead. But when a range war broke out around Puerto de Luna, that's just what happened. Lopez is locked up for rustling, Shad's boss, Tom Forrester, is dead, and Shad is on the run for the murder of a neighbor. Now Lopez is temporarily out of jail in order to track the man who double-crossed him. As Shad leads the posse on a chase into the deepest reaches of the desert, a bizarre plot emerges. Can the fugitive and the tracker, once friends but now deadly enemies, cooperate to both escape from the law? Can they survive the desert with every hand against them? And is there a secret place between loyalty and betrayal where these two men can learn to trust one another one last time?
