Abstract:

"This book provides an introduction to the Ancient Egyptian system of hieroglyphic writing and to the Ancient Egyptian language known as Middle Egyptian, which was written in hieroglyphs. With it the reader will be able to learn how to read hieroglyphic texts, and to understand the many unfamiliar cultural concepts they contain." "A thorough and up-to-date introduction to the Ancient Egyptian writing system and language, the book is written for non-specialists, and designed to be usable even by readers who are not familiar with foreign languages or grammatical terms. It is suitable both for college or university students and for self-study by the interested amateur. It also provides a complete grammatical description of the classical language of Ancient Egypt for specialists in linguistics and other related fields. There are 26 lessons, exercises (with answers), a list of hieroglyphic signs, and a dictionary. 25 short essays describe the most important aspects of Ancient Egyptian history, society, religion, and literature. It will give readers the foundation they need to understand the texts on monuments and to read the great works of Ancient Egyptian literature in the original."--Jacket.
