Abstract:

Milestones is a translation of a major work by the Muslim Brotherhood leader, Sayyid Qutb. The work is Ma'alim fi'l-tarq, written shortly before Qutb was executed by Nasir's government in 1965. The book is an important statement of Qutb's views at the end of his life. The title, which might be translated "Signposts on the Way," indicates the purpose of the book. Qutb describes the volume as a guidebook for the vanguard in the revival of Islam. "It is necessary that this vanguard should know ... the mile- stones of the road toward this goal. . . I have writ- ten 'Milestones' for this vanguard" (p. 12). Part of the book is taken from his earlier commentary on the Qur'an, while other sections were written specially for the book. This is an important work to be read by anyone who wants to understand the "new fundamental- ism" in the Islamic world. It will help to eliminate stereotypes (e.g., Qutb speaks of the constructive contributions of Western science and is not sim- ply obscurantist. – Review from http://www.jstor.org (Sep. 7, 2016).
