Abstract:

"Mirage is a fascinating story of gunboat diplomacy, servants of empire, "uncrowned kings" of the Persian Gulf, amirs, sultans, shaikhs, kings, and spies. Mirage is peopled throughout with colorful individuals, including Frank Holmes - honored as Abu Al Naft, the Father of Oil, by the Gulf Arabs; future prime minister Winston Churchill, who as Lord of the Admiralty in 1913 helped decide British policy in the Gulf by converting the ships of the Royal Navy from coal burning to oil burning; Harry Philby, father of notorious Soviet spy Kim Philby; Abdul Aziz bin Saud, proclaimed king of Saudi Arabia in 1932, Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, ruler of Bahrain, and Shaikh Ahmad bin Jabir Al Sabah, ruler of Kuwait - all key figures in oil negotiations."

"Replete with colorful descriptions of Arabia's folklore, history, and people, and featuring illustrations, a "who's who" of key persons, and copious notes, Mirage is a story of power and politics with relevance for our time."--Jacket.
