"In 1915, his campaign to challenge the 'mis-measure' of African peoples took institutional form when he formed the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (the Association). He envisioned an organization of scholars, teachers, and intellectuals who would unearth, write, and disseminate the truth about the African and African American past. He established and edited The Journal of Negro History (now The Journal of African American History) to correct the scholarly record within the academic and learned communities. To give voice to writers being turned away by white publishing houses, he established the Associated Publishers in 1921 ... By the time of his death in 1950, Woodson had built the Association into an organization with branches spread across the United States. Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), it continues the work of vindicating the race in the eyes of the world"--Page 4 of cover.
"ASALH publishes periodicals (the Black History Bulletin and the Journal of African American History) and products for Black History Month, an international event established by Woodson as Negro History Week in 1926. Under the editorship of V.P. Franklin, the 'Journal', established in 1916, is the oldest and best edited scholarly journal dedicated to black history"--Page v.
