My only worry in leaving this review is that I might accidently turn people away from reading this book. The reason for this worry is because Mister Roberts is a hard book to leave a review for. It doesn't have much of a exciting plot, and there isn't a captivating dramatic situation like you see in many sea stories. It is simply a book about the day-to-day dealings of a random replenishing vessel out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. However, it is an extremely captivating read. It portrays the characters with such astounding believability that you cant help but get caught up with the everyday dealings of the Reluctance. The book captures the cynical attitude of the average military man and illustrates it with such accuracy that you can almost feel it yourself. Thomas Heggen has an astounding grasp of what human nature is and this book reflects that. The little lessons that you find about leadership peppered throughout the book can change your whole perspective on what it truly means to be an effective leader. I would definitely recommend this book to any person interested in leading others, or even as pleasure reading. It is a truly entertaining story and a character-building story too.
