This book came out of a seminar structured to meet at anthropology conferences in the form of conference sessions. The editors put together a packet of theoretical materials centered on the discussion of modernity, postmodernity and tradition, and then presented drafts first at a AAA conference, then at the trinational conference in Merida, Mexico. The authors look at different ways in which 'tradition' is understood or played out, in different ethnographic contexts, either against or along 'modernity'.
