Abstract:

"When the First World War broke out in August 1914 the Germans mistakenly assumed that the British Expeditionary Force - 'that contemptible little army' - would be easily defeated. To their surprise, they were stopped in their tracks by the numerically inferior British, whose excellent marksmanship took a high toll on the closed packed German ranks. Eventually forced to fall back by the overwhelming German numbers, the British carried out a masterful fighting retreat across Belgium and northern France. At Mons, a handful of British battalions held four German divisions at bay for an entire day. This book examines the battle of Mons and shows why this battle has gone down in British military history as a name comparable to Waterloo or Dunkirk."--Jacket.
