Sixteen-year-old Steve is in jail. He allegedly helped some neighborhood gang members with a robbery that ended in murder. Steve is a talented writer; he keeps a journal while he's in jail. The journal entries help the reader understand Steve's feelings and the struggle within his conscience, but they do not reveal whether he is innocent or guilty. Steve also writes a play entitled "Monster," which is the story of his trial. Myers alternates between the journals and play to reveal the plot and characters to the reader. The book's format is refreshingly different, but the play format may be difficult for low level readers.
