Abstract:

The present study, unprecedentedly complete, throws a new light on the whole morale situation of the Revolutionary War. Prof. Bowman's account reveals the startling morale heterogeneity in the Revolutionary forces. There were many men of incredible courage and endurance, men who stood up without flinching, day after day, to a cruel ordeal; men who stood firm despite exceedingly trying circumstances. Here character and faith were clearly exhibited as the greatest forces in sustaining morale. But the indolent, the timid, the selfish, the dishonest, the extreme individualists, and the faint-hearted gave way, under pressure, to panic, despair, even treason. - Introduction.
