Abstract:

This collection comprises thirty-two items arranged in sections by name of individual and type of document. Family members mentioned include Maria Taylor Byrd (1698-1771), Elizabeth Hill Carter Byrd (1731-1760), Mary Willing Byrd (1740-1814), William Byrd (1728-1777), Alexander Campbell Wilder Fanning (1788-1846), Nathan Towson (1784-1854), Roger Jones (1788-1852), Winfield Scott (1786-1866), Edmund Pendleton Gaines (1777-1849), George Mercer Brooke (1785-1851), Robert Carter Randolph (1808-1887), and A.G. Mercer. Documents in this section are letters, affidavits and a eulogy. Letters deal with various concerns and are addressed to several persons. Some topics dealt with are: the education of John Carter Byrd (1751-1796), Thomas Taylor Byrd (1752-1821), and William Byrd, IV (1749-1771) in England; the death of Dr. William Harper (d. 1757); the horses, Valiant and Calista; the sale of tobacco; the health of Francis Otway Byrd and Elizabeth Hill Byrd Farley Dunbar Skipwith; the dispatch of brandy, wine, sugar, tea, coffee, peaches and soap to William Byrd, III; the death of Francis Otway Byrd and Byrd's service in the U.S. Army at Fort Erie in 1814.
