This collection consists of 367 items arranged in sections by name of individual and type of document. Items include estate accounts of Richard Barnes of Essex County, Virginia, and notes, 1820-1824; correspondences, 1812-1843, of Claiborne Watts Gooch (1791-1844) of Airfield, Henrico County, and Richmond, Virginia, with John James Abert and others concerning banks, education, a Virginia constitutional convention; also an account book, 1832-1836, concerning milling operations at Little Egypt, Henrico County; an appointment, 1814, of Claiborne Watts Gooch as deputy adjutant general of Virginia, and letters, 1826-1843, written to the editors of the Enquirer of Richmond, Virginia, by Dabney Smith and others on various topics; correspondence, 1816-1865, of Maria Rebecca Roane Barnes Gooch of Airfield, Henrico County, Virginia with L.A. Barnes and others; lists, 1839-1852, of slaves owned by Maria Rebecca Roane Barnes Gooch, a receipt and death certificate; a diary and passport, 1843-1844, correspondence, 1832-1850, a report, 1838, of Richard Barnes Gooch (1820-1851); a commonplace book, 1839-1840, correspondence, 1839-1851, and materials, 1842-1855, of Dr. Philip Claiborne Gooch (1825-1855), of Richmond, Virginia and the University of Virginia.
