Abstract:

This collection consists of 826 items arranged in sections by name of individual and type of document. This collection contains diaries, correspondences, essays, letters, speeches, and articles of Edmund Ruffin (1794-1865). Other members of the Ruffin family represented are: Edmund Ruffin (1816-1876) who wrote "Green sand of gypseous earth of lower Virginia (1818-1841)" and "Green sand of gypseous earth (1841-1853)." Both articles, written ca. 1853, concern the results of gypseous earth experiments; and Julian Calx Ruffin (1821-1864), who kept a diary, 2 January-18 February 1843 and 2 January 1843-24 December 1847. Entries in the diary concern farming operations at Ruthven, Prince George County, Virginia. Edmund Ruffin's diary, 26 January-13 September 1843, was kept while he was an agricultural surveyor of South Carolina. It includes notes concerning the feeding of African American children, harvesting of potatoes and corn, and the cultivation of Indian peas. Sections 2 and 3 each contain an article, "Incidents of my life, 1821-1851," written in 1851, and "Incidents in my life, 1845-1855," written in 1853 and 1855. These items deal with farming operations at Beechwood and Shellbanks, Prince George County, and at Marlbourne, Hanover County, Virginia; slavery; banking; the State Agricultural Society of Virginia; and the deaths of Jane Ruffin Dupuy and Ella Ruffin. Edmund Ruffin's correspondences range from 1823-1864; his essays and speeches are from 1840-1865; and his letters were written 1823-1861.
