Résumé :

This book provides key insights and information to criminal justice professionals on law enforcement contacts across cultures and races. Peacekeeping in a multicultural society in the 21st century requires new strategies, skills, tools, and cultural knowledge on the part of those engaged in all aspects of the criminal justice system and homeland security. Compared to more than a decade ago, contemporary law enforcement has improved resources to meet these challenges resulting from the diversity within communities and the multicultural law enforcement aspects of peacekeeping. The book addresses the key multicultural needs of law enforcement. The practical contents of the book contain critical information and insight that will improve police performance and professionalism. It is designed to assist all levels of criminal justice professionals in understanding the pervasive influences of culture, race, and ethnicity in the workplace and in multicultural communities. It continues to focus on the cross-cultural contact that police officers and civilian employees have with coworkers, victims, suspects, and citizens from diverse backgrounds. This fourth edition includes new or updated information on: community policing--new success stories and illustrations; immigration and unauthorized migrants in the U.S.; racial profiling status and new legislation; recruitment and retention of women and minorities; issues pertinent to sexual orientation and law enforcement; Native American tribal police and issues of identity; multicultural issues related to terrorism, homeland security, and disaster preparedness; the "Patriot Act" and related issues for law enforcement.
