Abstract:

A fine illustrated catalogue of the historic patrimony of the Museu da República, located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The book includes full-page color images of the rich historic patrimony housed in the palace: paintings (including portraits), decorative art, furniture, historic material (photographs and diverse documents), clothes, pistols, medals, coins, silverware, chinaware, etc. as well as texts and color photographs of the splendor of the building, its gardens and the interior design and its patrimonial decorations. The historic "government palace" that now houses the Museum of the Republic was first the residence of the baron of Nueva Friburgo, then for 63 years the seat of the Presidency of the Republic (1897-1960), a place full of power and historical anecdotes: President Getulio Vargas lived here during his presidency (1951-1954) and here he committed suicide. The edition commemorates the first 50 years of the museum inaugurated in 1960 "Since 1982 the Bank Safra publishes their famous and always desired book on Brazilian museums, 'that of the yellow box' (...) The Museu da República, in this year of 2011, had the honor to be selected for this 30th edition. A real present for the Museum that celebrates 50 years of existence. [Our translation]"--P. 7.
