Plot summary: A little girl is tired of sharing a room with her five year old brothers. She is about to be nine years old and wants her own space. In her house she has a storage area where she thinks her room would be perfect. She persuades her mother to let her use the space for her own room. Her family helps her clear it out and together they get her room done after getting a bed from her uncle, a new lamp from collecting stamps, a bed side table, and books from the library. Her room is now complete.
Personal response: I really enjoyed reading this story. I liked the fact that I could relate to the story in many ways: the family helping out one another, the Mexican culture, having to share a small bedroom with sisters, letting family stay until they have a place of their own, and much more. The Mexican culture believes in strong family ties. As well as sticking up for one another and being there when help is needed. I enjoyed reading this story because it reminds me of my own family and a situation we were in a few years ago. I was moving and I received furniture from family members. My aunts, cousins and uncle helped me with furnishing my apartment. I also liked how the story is based off of the author’s own family story. The story is of a Mexican culture. The characters in the story can be related to, they seem very realistic. The illustrator pictures are painted in beautiful bright bold colors.
