Includes some preservation photocopies made by the Prints and Photographs Division from original brittle newspaper clippings or captions found with the images.
The following prominent photographers have one or more works which are scattered throughout the LOT: Ed Bagwell, Cecil Layne, Layne's Studio, Arnold Newman, P.H. Polk, Scurlock Studio, M. Smith, James Van Der Zee, Carl Van Vechten.

Description: 977 photographic prints : various media, most gelatin silver, b&w, 7 color ; various sizes, most 8 x 10 in. or smaller, some as large as 55 x 40 cm. 24 prints : 1 engraving, 1 lithograph, 17 photomechanical, 5 photocopy, b&w ; 42 x 32 cm. or smaller.

Abstract:

Portrait and publicity photographs of individuals and groups used for publication and public relations purposes. Emphasis is on NAACP administrative and executive staff, branch officers and members; includes African American entertainers, authors, political figures, labor leaders, and some foreign government officials; photos of children and young adults. Many photos capture people in unposed situations. Some individuals and groups unidentified. Includes snapshots, some card photographs, and several photographic postcards. NAACP staff and other prominent people depicted in 5 or more portraits: Daisy Bates, Margurite Belafonte, James Weldon Johnson, Thurgood Marshall, E. Frederic Morrow, Clarence Muse, Mary White Ovington, Arthur Spingarn, Walter White, Roy Wilkins, Louis T. Wright.
