Abstract:

Correspondence from individual servicemen, their families, and attorneys complaining about racial discrimination on a wide range of matters. Few of the cases involved criminal charges or acts of violence. Instead, the largest percentage involves discriminatory policies or incidents that the NAACP had few legal grounds to contest until 1947 when President Truman issued an executive order barring racial discrimination in the armed services.
