Abstract:

George Wilkins Kendall’s story gains even more fire in the second half of his narrative. The story begins in the desert north of El Paso, as the prisoners are being marched to their destination. The brutal Captain Salezar delivers the Texans into other hands in El Paso, and the long march to Mexico City begins. The biggest difference between the first and second volumes of the narrative is that the captives are traveling through territory that was occupied by the Spanish for as long as 320 years. As the column moves south through Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, and beyond—and as Kendall enjoys the small liberties of parole granted by kindly officers—the story becomes almost a travelogue. Kendall introduces the reader to Mexican society in the mid-18th century, from tiny pueblo to bustling city. Always there is suffering. Always there is suspense. Kendall is bumped from prison to prison, from foul to fouler. Yet even with chains around his ankles, Kendall keeps a bright spirit and a wry outlook. There is a reason why this book has remained a classic piece of Texana for more than 150 years—it is an epic adventure.
