摘要:

The Bill Michaelson interview discusses the history of Local 65 of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU); relations with the New York Central Labor Council; RWDSU political activities, policies and leadership; and organizing activities among hospital workers.

The interview with Bill Michaelson includes discussion of the following subjects: the history of RWDSU District 65; red-baiting of RWDSU and 1199 leaders during the McCarthy era and the unionization of hospital workers; Michaelson's position as RWDSU representative on the New York City Central Labor Council (NYCCLC); the effects of hospital unionization on the organizational structure and membership of 1199's Drug Division; Michaelson's relationship with Harry Van Arsdale (president, NYCCLC); hospital boards of trustees' position on hospital unionization; and Van Arsdale's and Michaelson's participation in negotiations in the settlement of the 46-day hospital strike of 1959.

Also discussed are Harry Van Arsdale's politics, his relationship with George Meany and his role in securing Rockefeller's pledge to support passage of collective bargaining legislation for hospital workers, and Leon Davis' endorsement of Rockefeller's reelection campaign; the establishment of the Permanent Administrative Committee (PAC); the administration of 1199 under PAC; the disagreement between Michaelson, David Livingston (president, RWDSU) and Davis over labor's representation on and the administration of the PAC; the appointment of Bob Burke as labor representative on the PAC; Elliott Godoff's personality and his leadership in organizing hospital workers; the participation of Moe Foner, Armando Ramirez, Godoff, Davis, Sollie Molosky, Johnnie O'Neil, Michaelson, and Ricky Carbonnel in organizing pickets and food donations; the treatment of scabs and tactics in organizing striking hospital workers; and the effects of third party payers, public opinion, and Jewish and Catholic leaders on unionization of voluntary hospitals.
