There had never been a workforce like the navvies, a great army of men moving about the country following the work as it became available. This book tells of their extraordinary feats of strength and their often colourful lives. They worked hard and drank hard. They lived rough, usually having to do with huts and shelters cobbled together from whatever materials were available, and because they were always on the move they lived outside of society, with no shortage of critics ready to condemn them and their whole way of life. Often exploited by their employers, they were liable to erupt into riots that could have fatal results. But the navvies knew that it was their muscles and their strength that had dug the canal or built the line. The Industrial Revolution would never have been possible without the complex network of canals that covered the country. Anthony Burton looks at who these men were, where they came from - and destroys the myth that they were all Irish. It is a story full of drama, but above all one of great achievement"--Back cover."@en ;
