Abstract:

Collection consists primarily of Painter's personal and professional correspondence (1969-2002) that documents Painter's scholarship and professional life as an academic and historian. There are also teaching materials and student files (1959-2000 and n.d.) reflecting her role as a mentor to young scholars; book reviews, drafts, and other papers related to Painter's published works ([1970s]-2001); research notes, photocopies and other research materials, especially regarding Sojourner Truth and the exodus of African Americans from southern states to Kansas after Reconstruction (1976-1993 and n.d.); personal journals; color photographs, negatives and slides; black-and-white photographs, negatives and contact sheets; videocassettes; audiotapes of interviews with Hosea Hudson and others; and one reel-to-tape. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Collection of African and African-American Documentation.
