Richard Mayhew is a very normal Londoner, with a normal and rather drab life. However, a chance encounter with an injured young woman severs his links to the world he knows, and pulls him into a shadowy parallel existence in the tunnels and sewers beneath the city. Once there, he travels with the Lady Door, as she seeks to discover the mystery behind her family’s murder, while fleeing two vicious time-traveling assassins. Along the way he meets an angel, a warrior, a vampire, and a wide array of curious characters whom, had he met them above ground, he would have assumed to be mentally ill.
Indeed, it is those odd and troubled characters that make the story interesting. Richard himself serves as little more than a reference point for their strange behavior. As the central figure of the story, he does little more than tag along and complain about his sad state. Gaiman waits perhaps too long before trying to show Richard’s reluctant transformation into a hero, and so when he does save the day, it seems almost accidental.
But even a weak protagonist is not enough to weigh-down the vibrant world that the author has created. Gaiman is a story-telling master who specializes at depicting realities that are just beyond our sight: worlds of dreams, of shadows, of the things that happen in the corners of our eyes.
