Abstract:

During the 20th century, humans have built increasingly complex systems, fed billions of people, reshaped the landscape and re-engineered the human body. This documentary explores how hybrid corn enabled population growth while the atomic bomb threatened our destruction. Engineering innovations and hard work completed the Alcan Highway construction against the odds. The first heart transplant in 1967 illustrated our capacity for scientific and medical breakthroughs, while a national broadcast of the Selma civil rights protests showed the power of mass communication to promote freedom and democracy.
