Abstract:

In today's highly competitive automotive market, the strategic advantages to be gained by reducing the concept to customer time is extremely valuable. Automotive manufacturers and their suppliers must use new ways of designing, developing, and manufacturing products to continuously reduce this time interval. Simultaneous engineering or concurrent engineering is the process extensively used in the automotive industry to achieve this competitive advantage. Simultaneous engineering is based on integrating product and manufacturing process development in a concurrent mode. The purpose of this publication is not to discuss the methodology in detail, but to report on new techniques being generated in the ground vehicle industry. Contents include: effectiveness of CAE in the simultaneous engineering process; computer aided structural optimization of automotive body structure; structural design of aluminum space frame with battery tray; quality, productivity, and cash flow; application of QFD correlation matrix technology to engine development time; a study on the beam modeling of box channel structures: for the T type joint structures; breakthrough machining technology for the automotive industry; in-mold surfacing film; and optimal design of spot-weld and adhesive bond pattern.
