Abstract:

An "Old First" church struggles with an inherited organizational structure that no longer serves effectively a revitalized Lutheran congregation of the 1990s. The challenge facing this congregation and its leadership involves studying organizational dynamics and structures and their impact upon the behavior of members while remaining faithful to an evangelical ecclesiology. In the process of their study the leadership discovers that an evangelical ecclesiology offers a unique freedom for a Lutheran congregation to explore how its polity is grounded in its theological commitments and witness to the church as the "assembly of believers."
