摘要:

Ralph Lowenstein talks with New York Shakespeare Festival founder Joseph Papp. Papp discusses his idea to have American actors to perform Shakespeare; his development of an "approach" for Americans to do Shakespeare; the demands of Shakespeare on performers; his social and artistic objectives in founding the New York Shakespeare Festival; the early days of the Festival; the audience and its response to Shakespeare; the activities of the New York Shakespeare Festival and the Public Theater; his decision to begin producing non-Shakespearean plays at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park; the current production of Shakespeare's Richard III and its lead actor Kevin Kline. Discussion resumes at 14. min. with actors Estelle Parsons and Marian Seldes. Parsons discusses her one-woman show at the Public Theater, Orgasmo Adulto escapes from the zoo, by Franca Rame and Dariel Fo; Papp's "courage" to stage the production despite its poor commercial viability; the authors; the play's themes of humor, women's sexuality and communism. Seldes discusses her experience working with British director Jane Howell in Richard III, currently at the Delacorte; her portrayal of the character Margaret.
