Abstract:

Subject: Group portrait of six musicians gathered around a grand piano holding their instruments. Each figure is labeled with his name under the image. At left, Richard Arnold, a middle-aged man with a droopy mustache and small goatee, holds a violin in his left hand and the bow in his right. Julius Gantzberg (spelled Ganzberg in the print), a young man with a small mustache, holds a violin tucked under his left arm. Seated, Charles Werner, a heavyset man with a large mustache, holds a cello between his knees and points a bow at sheet music sitting on the piano stool. Standing, Wilhelm Lowack, a young man with a mustache and goatee, holds a double bass with his left arm. Behind the piano, Emil Gramm, a young clean-shaven man, holds sheet music in his right hand and a viola in his left hand. In front of the piano, Eugene Weiner, a middle-aged man with droopy mustache wearing a pince-nez, holds a flute in his right hand. The room's lightly suggested furnishings include a bust of Beethoven at center and a bust of Liszt at right.
