Abstract:

"Nuclear war -- what is in it for New Zealanders? Despite the warnings of scientists, computer experts and doctors, many New Zealanders still believe nuclear war will NOT happen. This book puts the case that we are, as Louis Mountbatten warned, "on the brink of the final abyss". New Zealand and her Pacific backyard, far from being removed from the action are right in the middle of a major military and nuclear buildup. Maire Leadbeater backgrounds these developments, and traces New Zealand CND's concern with stopping nuclear war, and especially New Zealand's role of complicity in nuclear war games. CND believes that New Zealanders can work together to reverse the dangerous developments in the arms race. As a small nation we are not helpless but on the contrary we are called upon to show a pioneering lead in Pacific and world affairs to bring about disarmament. A Nuclear-Free New Zealand and a Nuclear-Free Pacific may prove to be among the most important steps to nuclear sanity. " -- Back cover.
